Buying boilies is expensive. You can make boilies for a fraction of the cost at home. A few simple ingredients and kitchen tools are all you need. The boilies do not take much time to make. You can have about 5 dozen in a half hour.

Homemade boilies for carp and catfish bait.

The ingredients are common in many homes. If not in the home, any grocery store will have what you need.

  • 2 cups of dog food
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 TBPS. of cooking oil, whatever you have
  • 2 TBSP. of flavoring or 1tsp. of scent

The equipment is a few household items also. The process is very simple using basic kitchen tools.

  • Mixer
  • Large Bowl
  • Large Pot
  • Spatula
  • Measuring Tools

Grind up the dog food into a powder, with no chunks or bits. Place in a mixing bowl with the flour. Mix the flour and dog food while dry also. In a separate bowl mix the eggs, oil, and flavoring. Mix the wet ingredients well into a smooth consistency.

Add the egg mixture to the dog food and flour. Mix thoroughly and form it to make a ball. The ball should be firm but stick together well.

If the mix is too dry it will crumble. Having it too wet will be sticky and hard to work. You take small pieces and form balls about 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch. If the mix is right it will be easy.

Once you form the balls, make a small hole through the center. Use something like a stir stick for example. The hole is for the line to pass through. Do not make them too big.

Cooking the Boilies

Cooking takes only a few minutes. Using boiling water, cook the balls for 2 minutes. Place about a dozen or a few more in the pot. When done, remove and place on a cookie sheet. Repeat until you have all the balls cooked for 2 minutes.

If you want pop-up boilies the cooking method is different. Use a glass piece of cookware. Place the balls in the microwave for 45-60 seconds. Keep them spread out doing several batches.

Your time may vary depending on the microwave’s power. Adjust the time if needed. Use caution to avoid burning the boilies.

The boilies will be a little soft after cooking. Allow to air dry for a few hours. After the drying is done, place the boilies in a package and refrigerate them until use. You can freeze the boilies to keep for months.

You will save money making boilies. It does not take long and uses simple-to-find ingredients. This bait is less involved and time-consuming than curing chicken livers. Boilies work on catfish and carp.

You will find boilies offer an alternative to pack baits. Both work well for carp fishing. Yet, I recommend boilies for catfish and freshwater drums.
